Russia should attend to the issue of adaptation to climate change, said Ruslan Edelgeriev, adviser to the country's president for climate change, writes RIA Novosti.
According to the expert, humanity does not have time to get used to changes in weather conditions, as they change faster. Edelgeriev believes that adaptation to climate change is becoming critical. It requires “huge infrastructure investments and a long-term vision.” “At the same time, our country needs to seriously concern itself with adaptation to climate change, and I plan to focus on this in 2022,” he said.
The adviser to the head of state recalled the data of Roshydromet, which says that climate change on Russian territory is about 2.5 times more intense than the world average. This is leading to the melting of sea ice in the Arctic. Climatologists associate this phenomenon with an increase in the frequency of extreme hydrometeorological events and droughts. Edelgeriev believes that forest fire prevention will play a special role in combating climate change. He pointed to the need for a comprehensive fire prevention roadmap.
Earlier it became known that the average temperature in Russia in 2020 increased by 3.2 degrees due to climate change.
