Senator Tsekov compared Germany’s sanctions against Nord Stream-2 with the blocking of oxygen

To include the Nord Stream-2 project in the list of sanctions for Germany is the same as cutting off the air, says Sergey Tsekov, a member of the Federation Council Committee on International Affairs. No one is seriously discussing this and does not intend to do it, the senator is convinced. He shared his opinion in a conversation with
German Foreign Minister Annalena Berbock warned that Germany is ready to include Nord Stream 2 in the list of sanctions in the event of a Russian military invasion of Ukraine.
Speaking in the Bundestag, the head of the department stressed that Berlin is considering “the whole range of responses.” “Yes, we strive for dialogue at any time, but in light of the current situation, rigidity is required,” she added, threatening that new sanctions could affect the gas pipeline.
“And to be heated with firewood?”
The negative comments of the German Foreign Minister in the direction of Nord Stream-2 are flashbacks of Berbok in the days before the parliamentary elections, Tsekov believes. Then she opposed this project, the senator explained. “At the same time, many noted that her position on Russia and the Nord Stream-2 after she took office became more pragmatic, soft and not so categorical. But periodically, as you can see, it storms. You see, as a person who recently took office, she does not fully understand that consistency in politics is a great thing. She doesn’t have much consistency yet. But it feels like the leaders of Germany are working with her and explaining such things,” Tsekov said.
Periodically, Berbok falls under the influence of stronger Western politicians, Tsekov added. Such statements are direct proof of that, they should be treated with attention, but without unnecessary panic, summed up a member of the relevant committee of the Federation Council.
Nobody in Germany is seriously discussing the blocking of Nord Stream 2, he said. “Hardly anyone wants to cut off their own oxygen. After all, to include Nord Stream-2 in the list means to include Nord Stream-1. And what are they going to drown themselves with? Firewood? Some primitive statements, honestly, are already tired,” Tsekov said.
The very condition under which Nord Stream-2 can get on the sanctions list is not feasible, the politician stressed. “What does it mean “in case of Russia’s military invasion of Ukraine”? There will be no such case. Many in the European Union would like the two Slavic peoples to start fighting. They won’t wait. In any case, military actions will not be initiated by Russia,” Tsekov concluded.
Earlier, the German Foreign Minister said that the West should not confuse the territory of Ukraine with the territory of NATO countries when choosing measures to respond to possible Russian aggression and further military aggravation of the situation. She noted that the North Atlantic Alliance stands in solidarity with Kiev, but Ukraine is not part of the organization.
