The head of the 12th Main Directorate of the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation, Igor Kolesnikov, said that Russia is conducting experiments with nuclear weapons on Novaya Zemlya. Their goal is to confirm the reliability of the weapon.
It is noted that the experiments are non-nuclear. They must prove the reliability of the existing nuclear weapons. Kolesnikov also said that the United States is conducting similar experiments. They take place in Nevada.
Explosive experiments are non-nuclear since Russia signed in 1996 and ratified in 2000 the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty.
Kolesnikov also said that the radiation background at the test site on Novaya Zemlya corresponds to the norm and does not threaten servicemen and other people. They should not have any health problems.
