Mike Pompeo
US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo accused Russia of “neglecting international stability” in cyberspace. RIA Novosti reports.
This is how the head of the US foreign policy department reacted to the charges brought against the US Department of Justice and the US FBI on six alleged Russian hackers. “Russia, which presents itself as a champion of stability in cyberspace, is in fact one of the biggest troublemakers on the global Internet. We call on Russia to put an end to this irresponsible behavior, ”he said.
The US claims that all the accused are allegedly employees of the Russian Main Directorate of the General Staff of the Russian Armed Forces (GRU) and worked for military unit 74455. It is explained that they were involved in “some of the most destructive cyber attacks in the world.” Among them are the attack on the power system of Ukraine, interference in Georgia, during the elections in France and in connection with the 2018 Olympics. We are talking, in particular, about the spread of the NotPetya ransomware virus in 2017, which infected devices around the world and caused damage worth millions of dollars.
A NotPetya attack in 2017 disrupted infrastructure in Ukraine, with disruptions to the Central Bank of Ukraine, Kiev's main airport, and the Chernobyl nuclear power plant. At the same time, dangerous software has also spread among Russian enterprises. In the United States, the NotPetya attack was called “the most destructive and costly cyber attack in history,” and Moscow was blamed for the incident.
