Rubella vaccine named effective for severe coronavirus

The measles, rubella and mumps vaccine (MMR drug) effectively reduces the risk of a severe course of coronavirus infection. This conclusion was reached by scientists at the University of Georgia (USA), TASS reports with reference to the American Society for Microbiology (ASM).

The study involved 80 patients infected with COVID-19. According to University professor David Harley, scientists were able to uncover the inverse relationship between the level of antibodies to the mumps virus and acute manifestations of coronavirus. The more antibodies to the mumps virus in the patient's body, the less severe the symptoms of COVID-19 were, he noted.

One of the study's authors, Jeffrey Gold, said that the observed pattern likely explains the rare cases of severe COVID-19 in children and adolescents, as children receive the MMR vaccine twice in the US and European countries.

Earlier it was reported that the approximate cost of a coronavirus vaccine developed by the American company Pfizer and the German BioNTech will be 15.5 euros (almost 1,400 rubles) per dose. The cost of 300 million doses, which the head of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen announced plans to buy, will amount to 4.6 billion euros.

On November 19, manufacturers of the Russian Sputnik V coronavirus vaccine submitted an application for certification to the World Health Organization (WHO). The Sputnik V vaccine became the first registered in the world. Now her clinical trials are carried out in Russia, India, Brazil and other countries.
