The Rocket and Space Corporation Energia plans to create a new returnable cargo spacecraft to replace the existing Progress, said general designer of the enterprise twice Hero of the Soviet Union Vladimir Soloviev. The ship will be created on the basis of the spacecraft under development “Eagle”.

“We want to make a cargo return ship based on the Orel,” Mr. Soloviev told TASS. He specified that this spacecraft will replace Progress, which is now delivering cargo to the International Space Station, and also carry out refueling and orbit correction. “Progress has a serious drawback – we cannot return the payload from orbit on it. The downside is that it burns out, ”added Vladimir Soloviev.

The ship “Eagle” was previously called “Federation”, it was renamed in 2019. The ship is being built as part of the Russian lunar program. At the end of 2019, RSC Energia requested an additional 18 billion rubles from Roscosmos. for the construction of the ship.
