Roskomnadzor warned about the vulnerability of personal data in Whatsapp

by alex

Roskomnadzor said that the WhatsApp messenger does not sufficiently protect users' personal data. According to the agency, since 2014, the messenger has been transmitting “a significant amount” of data to Facebook (which owns WhatsApp). The messenger has previously warned that it will disable calls and messages to those who disagree with the new data processing policy, which suggests that Facebook will begin to receive even more information about messenger users.

According to Roskomnadzor, each country has its own security standards for storing and processing personal data. The agency notes that Russian and European legislation on the protection of personal data is more stringent than in the United States, where Facebook and its companies operate. “Citizens of Russia must clearly understand the risks associated with the transfer of their personal data to foreign companies,” – leads TASS statement of Roskomnadzor.

Until the end of May, the department expects from WhatsApp and Facebook to confirm the localization of the data of Russian users on the territory of the Russian Federation. Otherwise, companies may be held administratively liable for violation of legislation in the field of personal data.

According to the new data processing policy, WhatsApp will start transmitting phone numbers, transaction data and IP addresses of users to Facebook. Those who do not accept the terms will have limited functionality in the coming weeks: first, users will lose access to chats, and later they will stop receiving calls and notifications.
