Roskomnadzor warned Russian WhatsApp users about insufficient protection of their personal data. This was reported by the press service of Roskomnadzor, reports TASS.
“Russian citizens should clearly understand the risks associated with the transfer of their personal data to foreign companies. Russian and European legislation on the protection of personal data is stricter than in the United States, in whose jurisdiction Facebook Inc., which owns the WhatsApp messenger, operates, ”the message says.
Roskomnadzor demanded that Google, Twitter, Facebook and WhatsApp confirm by the end of May that the databases of their Russian users are localized in Russia. Otherwise, companies may be held liable for violation of Russian legislation in the field of personal data.
In early January, the WhatsApp administration announced that the personal data of those using the messenger will be made available to all Facebook application families. The new clause was added to the user agreement, which was proposed to be confirmed before February 8. After that, a massive outflow of users to other messengers began. Against this backdrop, WhatsApp postponed the entry into force of the new rules to May 15th.
