In the first half of this year, Russia blocked twice as many sites and individual pages of resources with calls for suicide or describing its methods than in the same period of 2020. This was announced by Roskomnadzor, the Izvestia newspaper reports.

“In this area, in the Unified Register for January-June 2020, 10.1 thousand sites or their individual pages containing calls for suicide or describing ways of committing them were deleted and blocked. For January-June 2021 – 22.6 thousand of such materials, ”the message says.

2021 also saw an increase in the number of posts about suicide identified on social media. In such cases, Roskomnadzor interacts with Internet platforms directly, sends illegal publications to representatives of social networks, and they voluntarily decide to block them.

“In 2021, 28.7 thousand sites or their individual pages containing similar content were removed or blocked, including 140 materials related to“ death groups ”,” the message says.

In 2020, 45.5 thousand materials with suicidal content were deleted or blocked on social networks. Of these, 354 items were classified as “death groups”.

Russia ranked third in the number of requests to remove content posted on Twitter between July and December 2020. 6351 applications were received from Russia, of which 569 were sent in court. Most of the requests – 64% – concerned the promotion of suicide and harm to health.
