Roskomnadzor accuses the project of the team of opposition politician Alexei Navalny of “illegal processing of personal data” of Russian citizens.

Roskomnadzor demanded that Google stop technical support for the site of the Smart Voting project, created by the team of opposition politician Alexei Navalny. This was reported by the “Kommersant” edition on Wednesday, June 23, with reference to the Yekaterinburg lawyer, the head of the legal center “Reputation” Andrey Elantsev, who filed a complaint with Roskomnadzor.
According to the agency's response to his appeal, which Elantsev posted on Facebook, Roskomnadzor sent a letter to Google with a request “to assist in taking measures to prevent the illegal processing of personal data of Russian citizens by terminating the technical support of the site.” Elantsev asked Roskomnadzor to block the resource, but it is not yet known whether the department will do this.
Elantsev contacted Roskomnadzor at the end of May, when he discovered that Smart Voting servers were located in the United States, and decided that users should be warned that their data was being processed on the territory of a “state unfriendly to Russia.” The data can be used “both for sending SMS with an appeal to vote, and for falsifying elections,” Elantsev said.
Authorities seek to neutralize Smart Vote
As part of the “Smart Voting” project, Navalny's team proposes to eliminate the dispersion of votes between different candidates in the elections in the Russian Federation and urges, by agreement, to vote for the most powerful opponent of United Russia. At the same time, the strongest candidate is determined on the basis of the results of the previous elections and current opinion polls.
The project was officially presented in September 2019, ahead of a single voting day in Russia, including the scandalous elections to the Moscow City Duma. In 2018, the Smart Voting website was already blocked by a court decision, but Navalny's team moved it to a new address, and the project worked without obstacles for two years.
On the eve of the elections to the State Duma, the authorities want to neutralize Smart Voting “in an amicable way,” but if it fails, it will do it “in a bad way,” political analyst Pavel Salin said in an interview with Kommersant.
