Earlier, Roskomnadzor announced the beginning of a partial restriction of access to the American social network Facebook. Appropriate measures are being taken in connection with the decision of the Prosecutor General's Office of Russia. Demands to remove restrictions from Russian media accounts and explain their reason were ignored.

How it all started

On February 24, Facebook imposed restrictions on the page of the Zvezda TV channel for at least 90 days. The reason for the restrictions was the repeated publication of fake information. In particular, the administration of the social network considered the reports of the Russian Ministry of Defense about the suppression of air defense systems of the Armed Forces of Ukraine (APU) and about the military border services of Ukraine, which did not resist Russian units, to be fake.

Restrictions include a ban on advertising on a social network, as well as the registration of new pages. In addition, the channel's posts will be pessimized in algorithmic results so that fewer users see them.

On the same day, the official Facebook accounts of Lenta.ru and Gazeta.Ru began to receive massive notifications about the verification of materials that were marked “False”. In addition, the social network marked the text broadcast of the Russia Today channel about the situation in Donbass as fake.

Roskomnadzor sent a letter to Meta Platforms management demanding that all restrictions be lifted. The department said that blocking the official account of the Russian TV channel “violates the key principles of the free flow of information and unhindered access to it for Russian users.”

Meta refused to comply with the requirements of the Russian authorities

Meta refused to comply with the demands of the Russian authorities to lift the restrictions. According to one of the vice presidents of the company, Nick Clegg, on Twitter, as a result, restrictions were imposed on the use of one of the services.

Yesterday Russian authorities ordered us to stop independent fact-checking and flagging of Facebook posts by four state-owned news organizations. We refused, as a result they limited the use of our services

Earlier, the Union of Journalists of Russia spoke out against censorship of Russian media in social networks. Representatives of the organization noted that from October 2020 to the present day, Roskomnadzor has identified 23 incidents that were related to acts of censorship by the administration of the foreign social network Facebook. Of these, as specified in the Union, there were 18 cases of censorship in relation to media accounts, four cases in relation to the personal pages of Russians and one case in relation to the Russian delegation at the negotiations in Vienna on military security and arms control.

The Union of Journalists added that they expect Roskomnadzor to bring to justice social networks that censor Russian media.
