Roshydromet announced the acceleration of climate change in Russia

Roshydromet named the peculiarity of global warming in Russia

Director of the Voeikov Main Geophysical Observatory of Roshydromet Vladimir Kattsov reported an unusual change in the rate of temperature rise in Russia.

If the world average level is at the level of 0.18 ° C over the past 10 years, then in the Russian Federation the temperature has changed by 0.51 ° C.

These changes may well be part of their own, non-global climate fluctuations, said Kattsov. He added that there is a high probability that the climate in Russia will change rapidly in the future.

Alexei Kokorin, director of the WWF-Russia Climate and Energy Program, said earlier that global warming in Russia is occurring twice as fast as in the world. And it leads to an increase in the number and power of dangerous natural disasters.

Climatologist Konstantin Gribanov also noted earlier that climate change in Russia will lead to an increase in dangerous weather events – “chaos will intensify.” His colleague Ekaterina Pestryakova, in turn, pointed to the risks of tornadoes, squall winds and severe frosts.

“The underlying surface is changing: forests are being reduced, there is more plowing and desertification,” the climatologist emphasized in a conversation with the URA.ru portal.

Gribanov recalled that climate warming is taking place against the background of the accumulation of the greenhouse effect. Also, the temperature is gradually increasing due to heat waves that travel through the European part of the country.

At the end of March, the head of the METEO TV forecast center, Alexander Shuvalov, said that if the average annual temperature rises by five degrees, a critical situation will develop in the world. Subtropical and desert regions will face an unprecedented famine, leading to massive migration to the north.

He recalled that in Russia, global warming is ahead of a similar process in the Northern Hemisphere. “We are ahead of our neighbors by about half a degree, and this is a significant value,” Shuvalov stated.

Andrey Kiselev, a researcher at the Voeikov Main Geophysical Observatory, explained that the climate in Russia is warming many times faster due to the fact that in the middle latitudes of the Northern Hemisphere the land area is larger than the ocean area.

“The ocean is a huge accumulator of heat: when it's hot, that part of the heat that is in the atmosphere goes into the ocean, and when the atmosphere, on the contrary, cools, then part of this heat in the ocean returns back to the atmosphere,” the scientist said.

Kiselev added that these changes have both positive and negative sides. Higher temperatures will encourage new crops to be grown, but more pests will appear. He called the permafrost melting the most serious threat. Due to the degradation of this layer, many disasters can occur.
