Romania and Bulgaria joined Schengen: what changes were introduced

by alex

Control at land border crossings has been abolished since January 1.

On January 1, Romania and Bulgaria joined the Schengen area, abolishing border checks with other EU countries.

About Digi24 reported this.

Citizens of these countries can freely cross borders with other Schengen members without additional checks.

To cap off the event, the Bulgarian and Romanian interior ministers met at the border crossing between the cities of Rusu and Giurgiu to open the free crossing of the international border.

According to Romanian media, “the queues at the border are a thing of the past.”

However, travelers will still need to carry any identification documents with them in case of random checks that may occur in the coming months. Also on this night, the borders between Bulgaria and Greece and between Romania and Hungary are open.

Recall that the Cabinet of Ministers changed the rules for crossing the state border during martial law for men aged 18 to 25.
