Moscow. October 3rd. INTERFAX.RU – A previously unknown Roman temple was discovered on the territory of the city of Tire (Sur, formerly the center of ancient Phenicia, now the territory of Lebanon), ArtNews reports.

According to archaeologists, the temple was built in the early period of the Roman Empire (31 BC – 193 AD) and was rebuilt in a later period. It is located on the site of an ancient acropolis.

The rectangular building was originally built of sandstone, with columns carved out of Egyptian granite.

In the Byzantine period, the entire territory was rebuilt, the temple was destroyed, and a platform was placed in its place, on which the basilica was erected. It was destroyed by a tsunami in the 6th century AD.
