The Russian orbital station will be the prototype for spacecraft that will travel to other planets. This was announced by the head of the state corporation Roscosmos Dmitry Rogozin during the congratulations of the staff of the Rocket and Space Corporation (RSC) Energia (part of Roscosmos) on the 75th anniversary of the enterprise.
“In fact, the new station will be a prototype of those large manned modules that in the future, in decades, will reach other planets not just with crews, but with a large number of specialists that will be required to master these planets of the solar system,” he said.
Rogozin added that the new orbital station should be radically different from everything created before, and not only in novelty, but also in “huge functionality.” The head of Roskosmos noted that it must provide Russia with full control over outer space.
In April, Deputy Prime Minister Yuri Borisov announced that Russia would stop using the International Space Station (ISS) by 2025. In “Roskosmos” RBC clarified that the period of work at the station agreed with partners in the ISS is 2024. Later, the state corporation said that they plan to abandon the use of the ISS by 2028. They indicated that the operation of the station after 2024 threatens risks due to the aging of the equipment.
First Deputy General Director of RSC Energia Vladimir Soloviev said that some parts of the ISS are seriously damaged and cannot be replaced, and after 2025, “an avalanche-like failure of numerous elements” is expected. Later, the executive director of Roscosmos, Sergei Krikalev, “rejected allegations of an increase in the number of breakdowns at the station and stated that the ISS modules are capable of operating significantly longer than their warranty period.”
Rogozin said that “Roscosmos” will remain on the ISS

Rogozin plans to discuss with his NASA colleagues the situation around the ISS in the fall. At the end of August, he said that Roscosmos was considering two options for the development of manned space exploration: building up the Russian segment of the ISS and creating a separate orbital station.
In the first case, an orbital service station will be created within the ISS, the Russian segment will be separated, and the ISS itself will be flooded. If a Russian station is created, it will be able to pass through the North Pole every hour and a half and through any point on the Earth every two days. “This option seems to me more interesting, but it is associated with a large number of scientific issues that have not yet been resolved,” Rogozin said.
