Ultra-Orthodox Jews call the Israeli army the "enemy".
Sunday, June 30, in Israel Mass protests broke out – thousands of ultra-Orthodox Jews rallied against their conscription for military service.
The Jerusalem Post, AP, Times of Israel and The Guardian write about this.
According to a British tabloid, the protest arose due to new changes in legislation requiring yeshiva students to undergo military service.
Times of Israel adds that demonstrators' placards included the words “We will not join the enemy army” and “We will die, but we will not join the army.” According to a local publication, protesters attacked the car of Housing Minister Itzhak Goldnopf as he was driving home, and the car of Israeli ex-Minister of Health Yakov Litzman.
The Protestants had clashes with law enforcement officers. Police said protesters threw stones and other objects at them. Why five Protestants were detained.
Jerusalem Post writes that law enforcement officers are investigating two allegations of law enforcement actions against protesters. The first concerns information about an attack allegedly carried out by police officers on protesters, and a threat to “rape a mother.”
The AP publication noted that in Israel military service is compulsory, but politically ultra-Orthodox parties have secured exemption from military service for their supporters if they study in religious seminaries.
Recall that Iran threatened Israel with a “war of annihilation” and named the reason.
