Professor of Yildirim Beyazit University in Ankara, Salih Yilmaz, in an interview with Lenta.ru, revealed a strategy that NATO can use in response to Russia's claims against the alliance. Moscow claims that the alliance has surrounded Russia with military bases. In response, NATO can reproach Moscow for the fact that it itself surrounded the countries of the alliance, placing its military bases in Syria, Armenia and Azerbaijan.

“The statements about Russia’s encirclement of Turkey, a NATO outpost country, will deal a powerful blow to Russia with its own weapon,” the Turkish political scientist believes. Yilmaz said that Ankara is dissatisfied with Moscow's “unilateral steps and conditions”, and its demands on NATO to provide security guarantees will not lead to peace in the region.

Earlier it became known that on January 10, negotiations between Russia and the United States on Ukraine and arms control will take place. On January 12, the Russian delegation will meet with representatives of NATO, and on January 13, with representatives of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE).

On December 17, the Russian Foreign Ministry published draft agreements with NATO and Washington on security guarantees. The documents were handed over to the American side during the visit of the Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs Karen Donfried to Moscow. Russia has proposed to the states of the North Atlantic Alliance to abandon plans for Ukraine.
