Scientists at Kyushu University in Japan have discovered the benefits of green tea and coffee for people with diabetes. The results of the study are reported by Scitechdaily with reference to BMJ Open Diabetes Research & Care.
It found that daily heavy consumption of these drinks reduced the risk of death in people with type 2 diabetes by 63 percent. According to experts, green tea and coffee are beneficial to health due to the various bioactive compounds they contain.
The study involved 4,923 Japanese residents – 2,790 men and 2,133 women. The average age of the volunteers was 66 years. All participants were diagnosed with type 2 diabetes at least five years ago. As a result, scientists have found that drinking at least four cups of green tea daily, plus two or more cups of coffee, reduces the risk of death by 63 percent.
The experts explained that green tea contains several antioxidant and anti-inflammatory compounds, including phenols, theanine, and caffeine. In addition, coffee contains many biologically active components, including phenols. “It is possible that the combined action of these two drinks enhances the effect,” the article says.
Earlier, scientists from the University of Cambridge in the UK and the University of Milan in Italy have discovered that being overweight is the most important factor in the development of diabetes, and losing weight can prevent the disease or even reverse its development. Experts analyzed data from 445,765 people who took part in the UK Biobank study on genetic predisposition and the impact of the environment on the development of diseases. According to the authors of the study, the results indicate that most cases of diabetes can be avoided if the BMI is kept below the threshold value that causes abnormal blood sugar levels. To do this, it is necessary to regularly assess the ratio of body weight to height and blood sugar levels.
