It was only announced on Saturday that Lewis Hamilton would stay with Formula 1 for at least two more years. He extended his contract with Mercedes until 2023. “We have achieved a lot together, but there is still a lot to be achieved,” the record world champion was quoted as saying.
At the end of the current contract, the Englishman will be almost 39 years old. Until then he is still chasing his eighth world title in order to make himself the most successful driver of all time. His 100th GP victory will probably happen this year.
The approaching end
But what's next? Will Hamilton end his career in 2023? On the sidelines of the second race in Spielberg, the Brit commented on possible speculations about his future. “38 doesn't sound too bad,” says Hamilton. “When I'm 38, there comes a point where I might want to do something else.”
In any case, he always said that he had no plans to be active in Formula 1 when he was 40. So his current contract could be his last. But he doesn't want to commit himself to that: “It doesn't matter when the time comes: I'll miss this sport, the competition. That's for sure.”
