Residents of Poland commemorated the victims of the plane crash near Smolensk
In Poland on Saturday, April 10, commemorative events are held on the occasion of the 11th anniversary of the plane crash of the Polish presidential airliner Tu-154M near Smolensk. This is reported by TASS.
It is noted that in many cities of the country at exactly 08.41 local time and 09.41 Moscow time (the time of the plane's collision with the ground on April 10, 2010), a minute of silence began.
According to the agency, one of the first to honor the memory of the victims of the tragedy was Jaroslaw Kaczynski, the brother of Polish President Lech Kaczynski, who died in the crash, and the chairman of the ruling Law and Justice party in the country. Kaczynski took part in the morning service, after which commemorative events began at the Presidential Palace and monuments on Pilsudski Square.
The incumbent President of Poland Andrzej Duda honored the memory of those killed in Krakow – in the Royal Wawel Castle, where Lech and Maria Kaczynski are buried.
Polish aircraft Tu-154 crashed while landing at Smolensk airport in April 2010. As a result, 96 people died, including the then head of state Lech Kaczynski and his wife, prominent politicians and military leaders. The Interstate Aviation Committee (IAC) concluded that the reasons for the crash were the crew's decision not to leave for an alternate airfield in foggy conditions, as well as shortcomings in the training of the presidential detachment's pilots.
