Rambler portal (part of Rambler & Co) surveyed users about digital literacy.

In April, Digital Dictation 2021 was launched – a large-scale all-Russian action to test knowledge and skills in the use of Internet technologies. Users answered whether they know what digital literacy is and how they use the power of modern online services.

According to the survey results, 65% of respondents correctly answered the question of what digital literacy is – it is the safe and efficient use of Internet services and technologies. 20% believe that this is the ability to work with computer equipment, 2% are sure that these are the rules of communication on the Internet, another 2% – the ability to write a website or program. 11% of respondents have not heard of the concept of “digital literacy”.

Almost half of survey participants (49%) use their digital skills primarily to read and search for news in the media, apps and social networks. In second place in terms of demand are programs and services for working with e-mail – they were chosen by 16% of the respondents. For 14%, viewing entertainment content is important, 7% prefer to use the Internet for education, 6% – for shopping, the same amount – for communication (instant messengers), 2% named services for obtaining services (taxi, delivery) as necessary.

At the same time, the majority of respondents are also aware of the safety rules in the network. 49% do not enter their data on random sites, 40% generally prefer not to share information about themselves anywhere, 6% do not care about the safety of their data, and 5% worry about it only during online purchases. Password strength statistics also showed good results. 86% prefer complex sequences, use services for storing passwords, or remember the order of characters well. And only 14% of Russians choose simple and identical passwords.

For 65% of respondents, the use of digital technologies does not cause problems. 28% believe that they have something to learn, and only 7% admitted that they were not educated in the Internet sphere. At the same time, almost three quarters of the respondents learned all the skills on their own, 19% from time to time seek help from relatives, 8% completed digital literacy courses.

The survey was conducted on the Rambler portal from April 7 to 13, 2021, the coverage was more than 60 thousand participants. 78% of men and 22% of women answered the questions.
