The speaker emphasized that Republicans are aware of the role of the United States in the world and understand the "importance of sending a strong signal to the world" about its support for its allies.
Within the Republican majority, assistance to Ukraine in the form of a loan is being discussed, as well as the allocation of funds from seized Russian assets.
Speaker Mike Johnson stated this during a press briefing in the US Congress, Ukrinform's own correspondent reports.
“There was a conversation around what we call the REPO Law, through which, as you all know, it would be possible to use the seized assets of Russian oligarchs and pay for support for Ukraine in some way. The concept of a loan was also discussed,” he said speaker.
According to him, “thoughtful, focused work” continues among Republicans, as well as discussions on the issue of external support.
“We cannot allow terrorists and tyrants to march across the globe,” he added.
At the same time, the Republican accused the White House and President Joe Biden of weakness on the world stage, which, according to him, is the reason why US opponents act in such a provocative way.
“We maintain peace through strength. That's one of our core, founding principles. Ronald Reagan said it all the time, and I still believe it, most of us do,” Johnson said .
He emphasized that the United States must demonstrate strength on the world stage, and it will do so and fulfill its obligations.
Johnson also noted that he would return to the issue of external support as soon as Congress settles the budget issue for the current fiscal year.
