Remembrance Day: Six Million Jews Killed During WWII
Today is the day of remembrance for the victims of the Holocaust. Six million Jews were exterminated by the Nazis during World War II. Someone was killed immediately, others were sent to concentration camps and experiments were carried out on them. But there were also those who managed to survive in this hell. The correspondent of the TV channel “MIR 24” Andrey Eganov will tell about them.
“Everyone looked through the eyes of acquaintances in the crowd escorted by SS soldiers. Everyone knew that they were being taken to be shot, ”a woman reads the memoirs of a concentration camp prisoner.
Svetlana rereads these handwritten memories of her mother through tears. When the Germans entered Ukraine, Galina Nikolaevna was about three years old. Like all Jews, death awaited her. The girl and her mother were already taken to the execution, but one decision changed everything.
“Her mom — my grandmother — just threw her out on the sidewalk. And at that time someone covered her and picked her up, and a few days later a little girl was sitting behind the fence of the orphanage and crying, ”Svetlana Ignatovich said.
Mom was shot, and the girl was adopted by a family of hereditary doctors. On pain of death, they hid the child throughout the war. They took care of her and raised her as their own. And only in 1945, when Galina's own father returned from the front, they said goodbye to the girl. Since then, she has been looking for her saviors all her life. Now Svetlana has taken up the search with the help of specialists.
“We first decided to find the documents about the family, and then I’ll get busy finding the Bolyarsky family, who saved the life of Svetlana’s mother. We really want to find it, ”says genealogist Nailya Khamidullina.
The “solution of the Jewish question” assumed the complete extermination of this people. During the war years, the Nazis killed about six million Jews. Almost three million of them are in the territory of the Soviet Union. People were driven into ghettos and concentration camps, gassed, burned alive and shot, and terrible medical experiments were carried out.
“Not only Germans, but also tens of thousands of collaborators from other countries of the world and other nationalities supporting them, took part in the process of destruction. And they were saving Jews, risking their own lives, too, thousands of people of different nationalities, different faiths, ”said Yuri Kanner, President of the Russian Jewish Congress.
International Day of Remembrance for the Victims of the Holocaust was established in 2005. The initiators were Israel, Canada, Russia, Ukraine, Australia and the United States. The date was timed to coincide with the liberation of the largest concentration camp of the Third Reich – Auschwitz. On January 27, 1945, troops of the 60th Army under the command of Marshal Ivan Konev rescued the prisoners. When the war ended, the Allied states decided to leave the camp intact – as a reminder of the tragedy of millions.
