Citizens who fled to Sudan have been called upon to return to war-torn African Ethiopia. The country's ambassador to Khartoum, Sudan, Yibeltal Aemero, said this in an interview with Sky News Arabia, quoted by RIA Novosti.
Aemero promised that the authorities “will try to solve this problem.”
“We believe that people who were forced to flee because of the conflict will be able to return to their homes at the moment when the situation in the west of Tygra begins to return to its natural course,” the ambassador said. He assured that the armed conflict will not develop into a regional war.
At the same time, the UN fears that the confrontation in Tigra could escalate into a civil war. The organization also reported 32 thousand refugees who have already left for Sudan, writes Reuters.
Earlier it was reported that the UN was preparing for a massive influx of refugees into Sudan. In the next six months, their number may reach 200 thousand.
In Ethiopia, a conflict erupted between the government and rebels from the Popular Front for the Liberation of Tigray. As a result of the fighting, hundreds of people have died, and thousands more are fleeing the country. Both sides ignore calls for a ceasefire.
The fighting takes place in the Tigray region in the north of the country, controlled by the Popular Front. The organization, which has been part of the ruling parliamentary coalition for the past 30 years, has been striving for the independence of the region. President Abiy Ahmed, who has been in power since 2018, has announced his intention to take control of the entire territory of Ethiopia.
