The United States signed an agreement with the European Union to supply at least 15 billion cubic meters of gas in the form of liquefied natural gas (LNG) in 2022. Thus, the EU is trying to reduce dependence on Russian gas.

This is reported by Bloomberg.

The signing of the agreement was announced at a joint press conference of US President Joe Biden and European Commission President Ursula von der Lyayen.

“We are coming together to reduce Europe's dependence on Russian energy… We must not subsidize Putin's brutal attack on Ukraine,” Biden said.

“U.S. commitments to provide the EU 15 mln cubic meters of LNG this year is a big step in that direction,” von der Leyen said.

Under the agreement, EU member states will work to meet demand for at least 50 bcm of U.S. LNG until 2030. LNG imports from Russia in recent years amounted to approximately 14-18 billion cubic meters per year.

Recall, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced the decision to oblige gas buyers from “unfriendly” countries to buy rubles on the Russian market and pay for gas supplies in Russian rubles.

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz rejected Russia's demand for settlements for Russian gas in rubles. He recalled that most agreements involve payment in euros or dollars.
