Rector of the RCTU Alexander Mazhuga: “The departure of scientists from Russia is a problem for national science

The departure of domestic scientists abroad is a serious problem for Russia, the rector of the Chemico-Technological University named after V.I. DI. Mendeleev (RCTU) Alexander Mazhuga. The head of one of the largest universities in the country said what, in his opinion, needs to be done to stop the “brain drain” abroad.

Since 2012, the number of scientists who have left Russia for other countries has grown fivefold. Such sad statistics were previously cited by the chief scientific secretary of the Russian Academy of Sciences Nikolai Dolgushkin. Alexander Mazhuga agrees that this tendency may turn out to be threatening for the national science.

– Indeed, there is a problem with the departure of scientists from our country. So I graduated from Moscow State University in 2002, half of the course went abroad, – said Alexander Mazhuga on the air of the radio station “Moscow Says”. – Of course, now there is no such outflow, it cannot be compared with 2000, it has decreased much, but there is exactly such a tendency, and recently it has increased slightly.

The creation of the most comfortable conditions for their work will be able to prevent the mass departure of scientists abroad. Mazhuga is sure that for specialists, the availability of amenities and a comfortable environment is more important than earnings.

“For a scientist, the most important thing is infrastructure, modern equipment and a critical mass of scientists around,” noted the head of the RCTU.

Another incentive for scientists can be the popularization of scientific achievements, large-scale information about the merits of domestic scientists.
