Perez remains President of Real Madrid
Florentino Perez will remain President of the Spanish record champions Real Madrid for another four years. The billionaire engineer and building contractor was confirmed in office on Tuesday in Madrid without an election until 2025, as there was no opposing candidate, as the club's election commission announced. Perez's last remaining competitor, the young entrepreneur Enrique Riquelme (32), withdrew his candidacy on Saturday.
After two first terms in office from 2000 to 2006, Perez has been heading the fortunes of the “royal family” without interruption since 2009. The 74-year-old president of the ACS construction group is now entering his sixth term. With Perez as boss, the club won a total of 47 important titles in various disciplines, including 26 in football alone. During this time, the Madrilenians won the Champions League five times.
Perez achieved world fame when he ushered in the so-called “era of the galactic” at Real and brought superstars such as David Beckham, Luis Figo, Michael Owen and Ronaldo to Madrid at the beginning of the new millennium. The club is currently investing a lot of money (at least 525 million euros) in the renovation of the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu. According to Spanish media reports, Perez still wants to sign at least one expensive and young superstar in the summer: He primarily has the French Kylian Mbappe (22) from Paris Saint-Germain and the Norwegian BVB professional Erling Haaland (20) in his sights.
