Joy and sorrow were very close together for Maximilian Hofmann on Thursday evening. First the central defender hit, then he had to go out injured.
In the Europa League duel against Dinamo Zagreb, the defender climbed into the air in the 34th minute with a free kick from Marco Grüll and headed the Hütteldorfer to a 2-1 victory.
But in the 92nd minute Hofmann had to be replaced injured. In the heated final phase, of all things, it was a collision with team-mate Emanuel Aiwu that meant the premature end for the 28-year-old. Hofmann and Aiwu crashed into one another in an aerial duel. The green and white captain remained lying on the ground with a cut and a bloody nose and was quickly taken care of by Rapids medical department.
Continuing to play was out of the question, however. Kevin Wimmer came on for Hofmann and helped to bring the 2-1 lead over time.
Hofmann could also fail for the Bundesliga duel on Sunday against Hartberg. According to the initial diagnosis, the tough central defender suffered a broken nose.
