Former Australian government employee Brittany Higgins, raped by a colleague in the office of the country's defense minister, filed a complaint with the police. Writes about this ABC News.
According to the girl, this happened in 2019 in the office of the then Secretary of Defense Linda Reynolds. Soon after the incident, she contacted the police, but then decided not to file a complaint out of concern for her career. Instead, Higgins told AFP about the incident.
However, now the girl is determined to ensure that “justice is done”: she has already turned to the police and filed a complaint. “First, I want the police to conduct a comprehensive investigation of what happened to me (…) and to bring the perpetrator before the law,” Higgins said.
Australian Interior Minister Peter Dutton commented on the incident and confirmed that AFP really notified him of the rape in the office of the Defense Minister. According to him, it happened just a few days before Higgins told her story to the general public. At the same time, AFP must inform the head of the Ministry of Internal Affairs in advance about all “politically sensitive” investigations.
