Rangers fans celebrate wildly
Three injured police officers and 20 arrests – that is the result of the championship celebrations for fans of the Scottish football club Glasgow Rangers on Saturday evening. The team coached by Steven Gerrard had previously secured a flawless record without a single defeat for the entire season with a 4-0 win against Aberdeen on the final day of the game.
The championship for the Rangers had been fixed since March 7th, but thousands of fans did not let themselves be deterred from celebrating on the streets of the Scottish metropolis – without any distance and mostly without masks.
As the police announced, there were riots, property damage and physical assaults in the course of the evening. “Our officers became the focus of the crowd and were pelted with rockets and flares,” said Chief Superintendent Mark Sutherland, according to the statement. He condemned the “shameful” behavior of the fans and announced further consequences for those involved. Anyone who was involved in the “ugly scenes” will be identified and arrested, according to Sutherland.
For the Glasgow Rangers, the 55th championship title means the end of a long dry spell. After a bankruptcy, the record champions were excluded from the Scottish Premiership in 2012 and had to restart in the 4th division. Since then, arch-rivals Celtic Glasgow had won the Scottish Championship nine times in a row. The Rangers now ended the season 25 points ahead of their unloved neighbor.
