Rain of millions: Spain's La Liga beckons cash injection of 2.7 million

The Spanish football clubs, some of which are heavily indebted, will receive the necessary financial injection. The investment group CVC Capital Partners wants to acquire a ten percent stake in “La Liga” for the purchase price of 2.7 billion euros, as the league announced on Wednesday. The clubs have yet to approve the deal. 90 percent of the money should go to the clubs.

As the league explained, the rain of millions is to be used for investment projects. First and foremost, this affects the infrastructure, but not player transfers. According to calculations by the daily “Marca”, Real Madrid and FC Barcelona would each receive around 270 million euros. The two big clubs are heavily in debt. Barcelona are said to have over a billion euros in debt. The plans for a billion-dollar Super League together with representatives from England and Italy crashed in the spring.

Marketing rights and sponsorship deals

The Spanish league was valued at € 24.2 billion in the transaction. Marketing rights and sponsorship deals are to be processed through the new company. “The agreement is intended to accelerate change in the world of entertainment and maximize the growth opportunities for the clubs,” said a statement from La Liga. This is also intended to mitigate the direct effects of the corona crisis.

In the previous year, CVC had sought an investment of 1.7 billion euros for a minority stake in the media rights of the Italian Serie A. The negotiations have stalled, however, as some top clubs such as Juventus or Inter Milan have vetoed. The Luxembourg-based investment company CVC already held the rights to Formula 1 in the past.
