Radioactive elements found in American honey

American experts have found traces of radiation in honey samples collected throughout the east coast of the country, ScienceAlert writes.

Geologist Jim Caste of William and Mary College in Williamsburg has done extensive research on honey samples collected throughout the United States. He took samples at random and found traces of radioactive cesium-137 in one of the jars.

After that, the scientist and his students examined all 122 specimens and found 68 specimens with traces of radioactive waste. It is noted that cesium-137 was contained in nuclear weapons during World War II and the 1950s, which were tested on the east coast of the country.

Caste was perplexed by the fact that the tests were carried out more than 60 years ago, while the average life span of cesium-137 is 30 years. Scientists cannot yet explain the reason for the presence of this element in honey.

Earlier it became known that a group of people in Georgia tried to sell radioactive americium-241.
