Russia must maintain a high level of reliability of domestic technology, as well as master a new generation of launch vehicles that meet the requirements of customers both within the country and abroad. This will help to succeed in competition in the space launch market, Russian President Vladimir Putin said during a meeting on the prospects for the development of cosmonautics, Interfax reports.

The head of state noted that now Russia occupies a leading position in the space launch market. So, last year all 17 launch vehicles were launched, and this year – all 15.

However, Putin drew attention to the fact that now international competition is growing in this area. Therefore, it is necessary to maintain a high level of reliability not only in the field of manned astronautics, but also in the field of injecting cargo into orbit.

“Of course, it is necessary to master the next generations of launch vehicles that meet all the requirements of customers – both domestically and on the international market abroad,” the president stated.

In this regard, the President asked Roskosmos to report on what is being done to increase the competitiveness of Russian missiles, including waiting for commentary on the work on the Angara missile system. According to him, the launch pad for such complexes is being built at the Vostochny cosmodrome.

“I would like to note that the first stage of the cosmodrome has already entered serial launches, four of them have been carried out since the beginning of this year,” stated Putin.

The head of state drew attention to the need to strengthen the ground infrastructure, which is necessary for the development of orbital astronautics and an increase in the launch of carrier rockets.

“In this regard, I hope to hear today also about the further plans of Vostochny, taking into account the creation of a new manned system with a transport ship,” the president said.

In addition, Putin drew attention to the fact that Russia is six to seven years ahead of the rest of the world in developing nuclear technologies for space. He noted that this advantage must be used, in particular, to accelerate the implementation of promising solutions.

“Over the past years, we have made significant progress in the development of unique technologies for nuclear space energy. According to experts, Russia is ahead of all our competitors in this area, ahead of the whole world by 6-7 years, ”said the Russian leader.

In Russia, since 2010, work has been underway to create elements of a nuclear tug based on a transport and energy module with a megawatt-class nuclear power plant. In January 2020, the first deputy general director of Roscosmos, Yuri Urlichich, at the Royal Readings announced plans in 2030 to launch a nuclear tug into orbit and conduct its flight tests.

After that, it will begin its serial production and commercial use. According to the contract, published on the public procurement website, the development of the preliminary design of the tug will be completed by July 2024, it will cost 4.2 billion rubles.

This nuclear tug is designed for flights to the Moon and the planets of the solar system. The device was named “Zeus”, the research and development work itself is called “Nuclon”.

The model of the Zeus orbital complex with a nuclear installation will be presented abroad for the first time at the International Astronautical Congress in the UAE. Before that, it could be seen at MAKS-2021 and the Army-2021 forum. A model of a transport and energy module based on a nuclear power plant was first shown at MAKS-2019 and the Army forums, which were held in 2019 and 2020. Putin was able to familiarize himself with the layout during a visit to the Vostochny cosmodrome in September.

During the meeting, the Russian leader also drew attention to the fact that failure to meet deadlines with the approval of a set of measures in the space sector carries risks for the implementation of plans for the development of the industry.

“I would like to note that the whole complex of measures with appropriate financing had to be approved by August 30. However, this has not been done so far, which jeopardizes our plans for the development of the industry as a whole, ”Putin said.

In this regard, the President asked the meeting participants to name the reasons for the delays and indicate the time when “this work will still be completed.”

The head of state recalled that the previous meeting on space issues was held in April. During it, they discussed the current tasks facing the Russian cosmonautics, as well as the foundations of the state policy in this area until 2030. Putin noted that some decisions have already been made in this direction. In particular, we are talking about the program for the development of the Russian navigation system GLONASS.

Earlier, the Russian president said that Russian specialists are developing the idea of creating a service orbital station. Since by 2024, according to the current agreements, the ISS flight should be completed.
