Putin removes Shoigu from the post of Russian Defense Minister: who will replace him

Russian dictator Vladimir Putin decided to appoint a new Minister of Defense instead of the current head Department of Sergei Shoigu.

This was reported by the press service of the so-called “Federation Council” of the Russian Federation.

Putin appointed Shoigu secretary of the Russian Security Council. In this position, he will take the place of the dismissed Nikolai Patrushev – who was called a rival of Putin and a potential rebel who could overthrow the head of the Kremlin from the “throne”.

At the same time, Nikolai Patrushev’s son Dmitry received a promotion. From Minister of Agriculture, Patrushev Jr. “promoted” to the position of Deputy Prime Minister.

What is known about the new Minister of Defense of the Russian Federation

Until this time, 65-year-old Andrei Belousov held the position of first deputy head of government of the aggressor country. He was appointed to this position in January 2020.

As the Russian service of Radio Liberty writes, Belousov was called the curator of the economic bloc in the government. The media reported about his alleged conflicts with economic ministries and the Central Bank. According to the publication, Belousov is a hereditary economist. His father participated in the development of the Kosygin reform, which attempted to introduce elements of market mechanisms into the Soviet economy.

Belousov was also the Minister of Economic Development of Russia in 2012–2013.

Since 2022, it has been under international sanctions from all countries of the European Union, the USA and a number of other states.

Earlier, Shoigu’s deputy, millionaire Timur Ivanov, who was responsible for government procurement and capital construction, was arrested on charges of taking a bribe in the amount of 1 billion rubles.

Adviser to the head of the Office of the President of Ukraine Mikhail Podolyak suggested that Shoigu will become “next” after the detention of his deputy.

ISW analysts say Putin wants to punish Shoigu for failing to achieve his goals in the war in Ukraine.
