Russian President Vladimir Putin has made serious personnel changes . Among the main ones is the dismissal of 72-year-old Nikolai Patrushev from the post of Secretary of the Russian Security Council.

As noted, Patrushev was the person responsible for the murder of Wagner leaders Yevgeny Prigozhin in August 2023. The WSJ reported that Patrushev's appointment as Security Council secretary in 2008 was largely a formality, and that Patrushev is the de facto head of all Russian intelligence agencies, making him the second most powerful person in Russia.
“Patrushev acts as a “hybrid intelligence officer and diplomat” and regularly visits world leaders on behalf of Putin. ISW cannot yet confirm what Patrushev's new role will be, but given reports of personal Patrushev’s importance for the stability of the Putin regime and Putin’s long-standing tendency to balance between Russian security officials, such as Patrushev, in the vertical of power,” the report says.
In particular, Patrushev’s next position will be an important reflection of Putin’s intentions.
