Putin did not trust Gerasimov to lead the defense of the Kursk region: who led the counter-operation

The appointment of Bortnikov as commander of the counter-offensive in the Kursk region indicates the dissatisfaction of the Kremlin master with the actions of the military leadership.

The President of the aggressor state Vladimir Putin appointed the head of the FSB Alexander Bortnikov as commander of the “counter-terrorist operation” during ongoing fighting in the Kursk region.

This was reported by analysts from the Institute for the Study of War (ISW).

“Putin likely appointed Bortnikov as head of the “counter-terrorist operation” because Bortnikov had previously proven himself to be an effective manager during crises that threatened Russia's internal stability and the Kremlin regime,” the report says.

ISW analysts recalled that Bortnikov was involved in negotiations and provided guarantees to the founder of the Wagner PMC, Yevgeny Prigozhin, during the mutiny last summer. After his re-election, Putin publicly praised the FSB director for ensuring Russia's security and sovereignty.

ISW clarifies that Bortnikov's appointment as head of countering the offensive in the Kursk region indicates that Putin is dissatisfied with the way the Russian military command is handling the situation.

Earlier, during an emergency meeting of the Security Council, which Putin held on August 7 against the backdrop of the successful advance of the Ukrainian Armed Forces in the Kursk region, Gerasimov promised the president to stop and push back the invading troops beyond Russia's borders.

Gerasimov subsequently spread false information about a “stop” in the advance deep into Russia. After his statement, about 10 more settlements and the Sudzha gas metering station, through which Russian gas is supplied to Europe, were lost.

On August 9, a counter-terrorist operation (CTO) regime was introduced in the Kursk, Belgorod and Bryansk regions of the Russian Federation.

As The Moscow Times reports, citing four Russian officials who asked not to be named, the inability of the Russian armed forces to resist the invasion made Vladimir Putin and the entire Russian command “nervous”.

Recall that the head of the Bundestag Defense Committee, Markus Faber, believes that the offensive of Ukrainian forces in the Kursk region demonstrates that Russian President Vladimir Putin “has nothing to do with the invasion of the Kursk region.” controls”.
