Putin called the victory of the Russian team a big and significant event for the national tennis. He stressed that the Russians showed team cohesion during the tournament. In his address, the President separately noted the contribution of Shamil Tarpishchev, for whom the award became the third as the captain of the national team.
On December 5, the Russian team won the Davis Cup for the first time in 15 years. In the final, the Russians beat Croatia 2-0. First, Andrei Rublev defeated Borno Goyo – 6: 4, 7: 6 (7: 5), and then Daniil Medvedev – over Marina Chilic (7: 6, 6: 2). In the semifinals, the Russian team broke the resistance of the Germans.
In the last draw, the Russian team reached the Davis Cup semifinals, where they lost to the Canadians. Previously, the national team won the tournament in 2002 and 2006.
