The President of the Russian Federation became the third world leader to fall under the sanctions of the European Union, joining Assad and Lukashenko.

The United Kingdom and the European Union almost simultaneously included Russian President Vladimir Putin and Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov on their sanctions lists.

An updated list of sanctions was published late on Friday evening, February 25, on the website of the British Foreign Office.

In the column, which refers to the essence of the British sanctions against Putin and Lavrov, the “asset freeze” is indicated. As the reason for the introduction of restrictions on the President of the Russian Federation, his order to start a military operation in Ukraine is indicated.

The reasons for the sanctions against Sergei Lavrov indicate that he was involved in attempts to destabilize the situation in Ukraine, undermine its territorial integrity, sovereignty and independence.

According to CNN, at the same time, the European Union included in the lists of sanctions, in addition to Putin and Lavrov, Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin, Deputy Chairman of the Security Council Dmitry Medvedev, Interior Minister Vladimir Kolokoltsev, Special Representative of the President of the Russian Federation Sergei Ivanov and other Russian politicians – a total of 98 people .

Among the restrictions is a frozen simplified visa regime for businessmen and diplomats. The reason for the sanctions is the same – Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

According to EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell, President Putin has become the third world leader to be sanctioned by the European Union. Previously, they were introduced against Syrian President Assad and the Belarusian usurper Lukashenko.

In addition to personal sanctions, the EU has introduced the following restrictions:

Among the financial institutions of Russia, Alfa-Bank, Otkritie, Rossiya Bank and Promsvyazbank, which serves the Russian defense industry, were included in the list of EU sanctions.
