The deputies are confident that they will be able to explain to the population why such a law is required in Georgia.

The parliamentary majority of the Georgian Dream party withdrew the draft law on the transparency of foreign influence, already adopted in the first reading, which led to mass protests.

This is reported by the local edition of Radio Liberty.

The statement of the current government says that “the lie machine was able to present the bill in a negative light and mislead a certain part of the population.”

“It is necessary that the energy of each of our fellow citizens be spent not on confrontation, but on developing the country in the right direction. Considering all of the above, like every member of society, we have decided to withdraw the bill we supported without any reservations,” the party said in a statement. .

The document notes that after “the emotional background subsides,” the ruling political force intends to explain to the population why the law on “foreign agents” is needed in the country. To do this, it is planned to hold special meetings with people.

What is known about the mass protests in Georgia

It should be reminded that on March 7 the Parliament of Georgia adopted the bill on “foreign agents” in the first reading. In Tbilisi, people took to the mass protest.

More than 15 thousand people took to the streets of the capital of Georgia. Water cannons were used against the protesters. In some places, the demonstrators built barricades of benches and garbage cans.

The protesters declared their readiness not to go home even if the security forces used special equipment on them.
