Protests against shop closings in Brazil

by alex

The closure of non-essential stores in view of the renewed increase in the corona numbers has led to protests in the Brazilian Amazon capital of Manaus. Dozens of people demonstrated in the main shopping streets against it, as the news portal “G1” reported on Saturday. “Shopkeepers are preparing for December all year round so that you can close now, Governor,” “G1” quoted a demonstrator as saying. “You have something to eat, but many people don't.”

The government of the state of Amazonas had taken the measures, which came into force on Saturday and initially apply for 15 days, because the corona infections and hospital occupancy rates recently increased again. The hospital “Delphina Aziz”, which is considered a leader in the treatment of patients in connection with Covid-19 in Manaus, is according to “G1” at 100 percent capacity.

Manaus was one of the first Brazilian cities to hit the limit in the spring corona crisis, the health system and the funeral system collapsing. Almost 200,000 people have been infected with the coronavirus in the Amazon, which is about 4.5 times larger than Germany and has around four million inhabitants, and more than 5,000 patients have died in connection with Covid-19.
