Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida on Thursday, February 17, phoned Russian President Vladimir Putin and discussed the situation in Ukraine with him. This was reported by TASS with reference to the Kyodo agency.

It is noted that the details of the telephone conversation have not yet been disclosed.

Kyodo points out that before the conversation, Kishida took part in a press conference, during which he called on the international community to help reduce tensions around the situation in Ukraine. “We should make efforts to reduce tension, given our relationship with Russia,” the prime minister said.

On February 14, Kishida at a meeting of the leadership of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party noted that Japan is ready to impose much tougher sanctions than in 2014. He clarified that representatives of the Cabinet of Ministers are preparing a detailed plan of restrictions for Russian individuals and legal entities in the event of Russia's “invasion” of Ukraine.
