Priceless artifacts: jewelry from the Roman era was found in Crimea
Archaeologists have discovered jewelry of the Roman era on the territory of the former southern suburb of ancient Chersonesos.
“Members of a joint archaeological expedition of the Institute for the History of Material Culture (IIMK) of the Russian Academy of Sciences and the State Hermitage, which is working on the site of the future historical and archaeological park in Chersonesos, discovered jewelry of the Roman era during excavation of burials,” RIA Novosti quotes the institute's release.
Experts carried out work on the site where the necropolis of the Roman period was previously located, which consisted of several burial chambers carved into the rocks.
According to Sergei Solovyov, a leading researcher at the State Hermitage and a researcher at the Institute for the History of Material Culture of the Russian Academy of Sciences, two such burials were found, dating from the first centuries of our era. One of them had been looted earlier, but small decorations have been preserved in it, which the intruders probably did not notice.
“This is a paired burial of a man and a woman, in which two rings, earrings, beads, ceramic vessels were found,” added Soloviev.
According to him, in the second burial, the bones were poorly preserved due to the high humidity. However, it retains metal artifacts, including decorations, as well as nails, which were probably used to fasten wooden platforms.
Found jewelry items made of yellow metal (presumably gold) are of high artistic value. They are interesting from the point of view of production technology, symbolism of images and their affiliation. Some of them used the weaving technique. The earrings are made in the form of an openwork disc with pendants, and the rings have letters of the Latin alphabet. Experts believe that the items were made in the 3rd-4th centuries.
Earlier it was reported that archaeologists discovered in the Crimea the area of the ancient city of Tauric Chersonesos. Presumably, it was in this place that Prince Vladimir was baptized.
