For the sake of receiving numerous monetary compensation, the man pretended to be sick.
UK police officer Matthew Littlefer was imprisoned for over $ 200,000 in a fraudulent scheme. The man claimed that he was physically unable to continue his police work after a minor accident, which, according to Littlefer, confined him to a wheelchair. The scheme was exposed after an application on a former policeman's mobile phone showed that he was walking 10 thousand steps a day.
This is reported by the Dailymail.
For more than two years, a former police officer Matthew Littlefer demanded full wages and other social benefits from his management. They say that in 2017 he had an accident and was so traumatized that “he could not even lift the kettle at home.”
The secret surveillance operation for Littlefer began when colleagues of the former law enforcement officer suspected him of fraud. They accidentally noticed that Littlefer plays football quite easily with his children, walks the dog, and even runs and rides a bicycle.
When investigators checked the defendant's phone, they found that several times in one of the applications it was recorded that Littlefer walks 10 thousand steps a day, which is almost 8 km.
Investigators confirmed that the former law enforcement officer simply “lived a normal life”, deceiving his leadership in order to receive financial compensation for health reasons.
When interrogated by police, Littlefer replied that only thanks to handfuls of strong painkillers he could play sports so that stay in shape.
Police officers found four unopened bags of drugs that Littlefer had been prescribed by a doctor. As it turned out, the pseudo-patient did not take them, as evidenced by a blood test.
In the end, the 36-year-old fraudster was sentenced to two years and three months “for his arrogance.” The judge also stressed that the crime of the former law enforcement officer undermines public confidence in the police.
According to the investigation, Matthew Littlefer became a police officer back in 2008. However, in 2017 he had a minor accident, after which he seemed unable to continue his service.
The accused went to the hospital with complaints of pain and injury. And after he was discharged, he said that he was ill and unfit for service.
Then the management suggested to Littlefer to reduce working hours and provided the opportunity to work from home. But the defendant refused because of a complaint about “unspeakably severe pain.”
Then, in September 2019, he was already offered to retire for health reasons, but instead of accepting this offer, the defendant appealed to continue to receive numerous compensation.
“He constantly complained of long-term injuries, chronic pain throughout his body and constant pain in his right knee,” says Littlefer's doctor.
In April 2020 of the year, the Dorset Police Anti-Corruption Department launched a covert investigation, as a result of which Littlefer's guilt was proven. In total, while on sick leave, he fraudulently received more than $ 200,000 in compensation.
