Hundreds of residents are in temporary shelters.

A powerful eruption of the Lewotobe volcano on the Indonesian island of Flores has killed at least 10 people, destroying homes and a monastery of Catholic nuns.

AP writes about this.

According to observer Firman Yosef, the volcano ejected thick brown ash to a height of up to 2,000 meters, and hot ash covered neighboring villages, destroying houses, including a monastery of Catholic nuns. Volcanic materials spread up to 6 km from the crater, covering settlements with tons of ash and forcing local residents to evacuate.

National Disaster Management Agency spokesman Abdul Mukhari said search operations were continuing as bodies of the dead, including a child, remained under the rubble. It is noted that more than 10 thousand people in ten villages were affected by the eruption, some of them temporarily found refuge with relatives, while local authorities are preparing schools as temporary shelters for others.

The volcano monitoring agency raised the alert level to the highest and expanded the evacuation zone to 7 kilometers. Agusta Palma, head of the St. Gabriel Foundation, which oversees monasteries on the island, said one nun had died and another was missing. Photos released showed volcanic ash completely covering buildings, with the hot material causing fires.

Lewotobi Laki Laki is one of two volcanoes in the region, locally known as the “man's mountain” and “woman's mountain.” In January, about 6,500 people were evacuated due to activity at the volcano, and the local airport was also closed. According to Geological Agency Director Muhammad Wafid, the sudden eruption was caused by a blockage of magma, which increased pressure and led to a powerful explosion.

This is the second major eruption in Indonesia in recent weeks — on October 27, the Marapi volcano on the island of Sumatra also emitted huge columns of ash, but there were no casualties.
