Portuguese parliament approves law to legalize euthanasia

by alex

The Portuguese Parliament overwhelmingly approved a law that makes euthanasia off the mark. Radio e Televisao de Portugal reports.

136 members of parliament were in favor, 78 were against, four abstained.

Now the bill must be considered by the President of the country, Marcela Rebela de Sousa. He can veto, send a document to the Constitutional Court, or adopt and make public.

According to Radio e Televisao de Portugal, according to the law, persons over 18 years of age who do not suffer from mental disorders or illnesses can apply for euthanasia. They cannot independently ask for death with medical assistance, the application is submitted only through a doctor.

Earlier, euthanasia in Portugal had already tried to decriminalize in 2018, but then the law did not pass through parliament.

Former Minister of Health of Russia Veronika Skvortsova said in 2019 that the issue of permitting euthanasia in our country should be decided taking into account the opinion of citizens, but so far there is not even a time frame for its consideration. She noted that in some countries where the procedure has been approved, such as the Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg and the United States, citizens' right to it is abused.
