Portugal's temporary protection for refugees from Ukraine lasted one year, and in March 2023 the government adopted a resolution to extend it for six months.

Portugal provides another six months of temporary protection to Ukrainian refugees. His government should approve “soon”.

This was reported by the office of the Deputy Minister and Parliamentary Affairs, writes The Portugal news.

The office of Minister Ana Catarina Mendes said that “the government considers it necessary to determine a new extension of temporary protection for a period of six months.”

The government also notes that it adheres to the intentions of the European Commission to extend temporary protection for migrants from Ukraine until March 2024.

The European Commission announced today, 14 September, that it will continue the temporary protection for people displaced by the war in Ukraine caused by the Russian invasion, adopted in March 2022, guaranteeing support “for as long as necessary”. This was stated by the head of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, in her speech on the State of the Union in 2023 at the plenary meeting of the European Parliament in Strasbourg.

Temporary protection in Portugal for refugees from Ukraine is provided automatically. It initially lasted one year, and in March 2023 the government decided to extend the provision of this document for six months.

Data sent to Lusa by the Foreigners and Borders Service show that since the outbreak of the war on February 24 2022 Portugal granted 57,390 temporary protections, 34,602 of which to women and 22,788 to men.

According to SEF, of the 57,390 temporary permits, 14,434 were granted to minors, representing about 25% of the total.< /p>
