The host of the popular Top Gear car show, Sabine Schmitz, has died after battling cancer for several years. According to the Daily Mail, she passed away at the age of 51.
Before joining the TV project, Schmitz was a professional driver. She received the unofficial title of Queen of the Nurburgring in honor of the racetrack of the same name in Germany. Subsequently, in one of the Top Gear issues, she rode her favorite track with her colleague Jeremy Clarkson.
The presenter first spoke about her disease in July 2020. She has been suffering from an extremely treatment-resistant form of cancer since 2017, Schmitz said. Clarkson expressed his condolences over the death of Schmitz. “Terrible news about Sabine Schmitz. So sunny, always full of life, ”he added.
Due to illness, the presenter was unable to participate in the competition last year. In July 2020, Schmitz noted that the treatment helped to reduce the pain she experienced due to cancer for a while, but they soon returned.
Schmitz first appeared on Top Gear in 2004. Then she competed with Clarkson, choosing a Ford Transit cargo van for the race. Clarkson drove a Jaguar S-Type passenger car. At the finish line, Schmitz managed to close the gap with the leader to a minimum of 10 seconds.
