Mourning at Bayern. Long-time employee Wolfgang Gebhardt died at the age of only 65.
Bad news from Munich. FC Bayern mourns the loss of its long-time employee Wolfgang “Atze” Gebhardt. The club's former physiotherapist died at the age of 65.
Gebhardt worked for the club for more than 20 years, was on board for a total of eleven German championship titles, five cup wins, one title each in the Champions League, the UEFA Cup and the World Cup.
The news of the death of the former staff member hits the club hard before the quarter-final second leg of the premier class against Paris. Gebhardt was very popular within the club. He looked after the current Bayern board members Oliver Kahn and Hasan Salihamidzic during their playing days as did coach Hansi Flick. Veterans like Thomas Müller were allowed to work with the ex-physio.
Bayern boss Karl-Heinz Rummenigge: “We will miss Atze Gebhardt very much. His professional and human qualities have made him a particularly important part of this club. We all appreciated his always funny, happy manner, and the players felt in his hands always in good hands. “
The second leg between PSG and Bayern will start at 9 p.m. on Tuesday. Paris won the first leg away 3-2.
