Pope's Special Envoy for Ukraine Arrives in Moscow: What is the Purpose of the Visit

"Messenger of Peace" Pope Francis Zuppi has arrived in Moscow for talks again.

The Pope's special envoy to Ukraine, Cardinal Matteo Zuppi, has arrived in Moscow.

Vatican News reports this.

According to the director of the Holy See press service, Cardinal Matteo Zuppi began on Monday, October 14, 2024 g., his second visit to Moscow “as part of the mission he was entrusted with by Pope Francis last year to meet with (Russian – Ed.) authorities and assess additional efforts to facilitate the reunification of Ukrainian children with with their relatives and exchange prisoners, meaning the achievement of such an expected peace.”

According to the Italian publication la Repubblica, Zuppi has already met with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov. He will also have an audience with war criminal, Russian Commissioner for Children's Rights Maria Lvova-Belova.

According to the publication, Zuppi will stay in Moscow until October 16.

The publication recalled that in May of last year, Pope Francis entrusted Cardinal Matteo Zuppi with the task of “carrying out a mission that could help ease tensions in the war in Ukraine.” As part of this mission, Cardinal Matteo Zuppi visited Kyiv, Moscow, Washington and Beijing.

Recall that the International Criminal Court (ICC) issued arrest warrants for President Vladimir Putin and his Commissioner for Children's Rights Maria Lvova-Belova for the illegal deportation of Ukrainian children to Russian-controlled territory.
