“Pope Francis knows about Diego Maradona’s death, remembering warmly meeting him and praying as he did in recent days when he learned about the health of a football player,” said the director of the press center Matteo Bruni.
Maradona's death became known on November 25. The information was confirmed by his lawyer, and the first to report the incident were the journalists of the Argentinean Clarin. In November, Maradona was hospitalized with a cerebral hemorrhage and was later discharged. Death was due to a heart attack.
As a footballer, Maradona is known for his performances for Barcelona, Napoli and Newells Old Boys. As part of the Argentina national team, he became world champion in 1986. Considered one of the greatest players in football history.
